The BET Awards were first held in 2001, and will take place virtually this year on Sunday, simulcast on CBS. I am so sad we don’t get a red carpet: Nominees include H.E.R, Megan Thee Stallion, Beyonce, Lizzo, Cynthia Erivo, Angela Bassett, Issa Rae, Regina King, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zendaya, Serena, Coco Gauff, Storm Reid, Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, and Chloe x Halle, so it would have been a GREAT red carpet — and I sincerely hope that wherever they are on Sunday night, they pop up on camera and walk around in some (safely provided) couture. In the meantime, I gathered some highlights from the first five ceremonies, from 2001 to 2006, including a visit from The Purple One.
