Rihanna pulled off a nifty trick this month in Harper’s Bazaar: She not only subtracted the “story” from “cover story” — there is no article; only photos and video — but managed to get shoppable links thrown in for all her Fenty makeup, so it’s even more of an advertorial-writ-large than a standard profile is. It’s the Beauty Issue, so I’m sure they’ll just say it’s a cosmetics showcase (cha-ching, Fenty Beauty), but I will be very sad if this becomes a common occurrence. Because yes, photos are striking, but I like the proverbial thousand words; they are worth something to me, too.
